photo editing - How can I effectively change the background of a portrait in Photoshop?

I have often attempted to change the background of a portrait image. But every time I try, the image of a person doesn't gel properly with the new background. It doesn't look seamless. Can some one tell are there any guidelines on effectively changing a background of a portrait in Photoshop ?

Is there anything in Photoshop that we can use to adjust the color levels of the final image so that the background and the picture both are in perfect sync and doesn't look funny.

Are there any other tools? How do professional photographers/Photoshop experts effectively achieve this?
